The art world has lost another iconic painter with the passing of legendary artist Syed Haider Raza at the age of 94, in New Delhi. He was suffering from old-age related ailments. He was born in Madhya Pradesh is 1922 and went on to study at the Sir J J School of Arts in Mumbai, post which he founded the Bombay Progressive Arts’ Group in 1947 along with F. N. Souza, K. H. Ara, M. F. Hussain, S. K. Bakre and others.
Raza will always be known for abstracts in acrylic, with his instantly recognizable geometric motifs. He popularised the themes of prakriti (nature), kundalini (primal energy), tribhuj (triangle) and bindu (circle/ dot).
He spent 60 years of his life in France where he produced most of his famous works and was awarded the Legion of Honour (highest civilian award given by the French Government) along with the Padma Vibhushan by the Indian Government.
