5 Movies & Shows That Are Based On Indo-Pak Relationships

The tension between India and Pakistan has been the topic of drama for numerous Bollywood and Television storytellers. Being an intense situation in itself, content made around this relationship has always got eyeballs and has been a talking point for fans and a reason for multiple debates. On the flipside, there are a few beautifully made movies and shows that actually bring to life the positive side of this relationship. These are told through the message of love and harmony, by characters who believe in the notion of humanity. One such show is Kaafir, a brand new series starring Dia Mirza, Dishita Jain & Mohit Raina. Released this month, you can watch Kaafir on ZEE5.

Here are 4 recent Bollywood movies and show that does a fantastic job of showing how to bridge the differences between India and Pakistan:

1. Bajrangi Bhaijaan

The film is about Pavan’s (i.e Salman Khan) quest to unite a small Pakistani girl who gets separated from her mother at an Indian railway station unknowingly. The story unfolds as Pavan takes on his promise to drop the girl to her parents, against all odds.  The movie highlights a very emotional Indo-Pak sentiment and is successful in reminding us of expressing love and harmony towards our neighbour. Directed by Kabir Khan, the Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor-starrer film also features the talented actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the adorable Harshaali Malhotra playing crucial roles.



2. Veer-Zara

Starring Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta, this movie is a story of love and separation but in an unconventional way. Directed by Yash Chopra, Veer Zara tells the story of an Indian Airforce Squadron Leader (i.e Shah Rukh Khan) who falls in love with a woman from across the border (i.e Preity Zinta) as she travels to a small Indian village to scatter the ashes of her grandmother.

3. Kaafir

Inspired by the true story of Shainaz (Kainaaz on screen, played by Dia Mirza), Kaafir documents a woman’s journey for justice. Escaping from Pakistan, Kainaaz jumps into a river with the intention to kill herself but ends up crossing the border into India and is thereafter caught by the Indian army who believe she’s a terrorist. While in captivity, her daughter Seher is born who she raises behind bars. Vedant Rathod (i.e Mohit Raina) helps her fight her case amidst many twists to the story. Released on 15th of June on ZEE5, the series is written by Bhavani Iyer, who is known for writing the successful Bollywood drama Raazi and has been directed by Sonam Nair.

4. Raazi

Based on a true story, Raazi is an adaptation of Harinder Sikka’s novel “Calling Sehmat”. It’s a story about an undercover RAW spy, Sehmat (i.e Alia Bhatt) married into a Pakistani family during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Sehmat is sent to Pakistan in 1971, to source out any information she could, as the war was becoming imminent between India and Pakistan. Raazi starred Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal in lead roles and was directed by Meghna Gulzar.



5. Ek Tha Tiger

Ek Tha Tiger is an Indian espionage action drama, where India’s top spy Tiger (played by Salman Khan), falls in love with his enemy Zoya (played by Katrina Kaif). Tiger is sent on a simple mission to Dublin to observe a scientist of Indian origin who is suspected of sharing information with the Pakistani defense establishment. Tiger attempts to meet the scientist but is not successful. What happens when he tries to befriend the scientists’ part-time caretaker? Well, it’s stuff that legendary story-telling is made of.
