The sticky, humid weather during the Mumbai monsoon definitely calls for a weekend providing some respite from the heat. But there is something about the monsoon that definitely casts a spell leaving us craving Masala Chai along with some Bhajiya with green chutney. Here is a list of five places around Munbai that you must visit this monsoon:
1. KarnalaÂ
Distance from Mumbai: 48 kms approximately
Recommended Duration:Â 1.5-2 hour drive from Mumbai
A paradise for all nature lovers and bird watchers, Karnala is known for its fort treks and the bird sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to some of the most exotic birds like the Malabar Whistling Thrush, Magpie Robin and Paradise Flycatcher and the monsoon only makes it better as you can spot some migratory birds too! The place also offers a majestic view of the misty Sahyadri ranges in the monsoon with beautiful waterfalls to explore.

2. Matheran
Distance from Mumbai: 100 kms approximately
Recommended Duration:Â 2.5 hour drive from Mumbai
Talk about living in the clouds – Matheran is the destination for you!  The hill station that screams ‘calm’ like no other because of its no vehicles allowed within the town rule makes it the perfect ‘de-stress’ getaway. The beautiful Charlotte Lake and the ancient Pisarnath Mahadev Temple must be a must visit during your time there.

3. Alibaug
Distance from Mumbai: 108 kms approximately
Recommended Duration:Â 3 hour drive from Mumbai
Alibaug – boasts its beaches like no other! However, for that monsoon one must visit the Korlai Fort. A trek to the top offers a panoramic view of the sea and it’s amazing! Known for its coastal cuisine and sea food, Alibaug makes room for food lovers as well.

4. Igatpuri
Distance from Mumbai: 120 kms approximately
Recommended Duration:Â 2.5 hour drive from Mumbai
Breathtaking mountain views, lush green spreads, magnificent waterfalls – Igatpuri is a small hill station located in the Sahyadri Hills in the Western Ghats. Igatpuri is also know for the Vipassana International Academy where one can learn the age old technique of meditation called Vipassana.

Recommended Duration:Â 3.5 hour drive from Mumbai
The drive to Malshej Ghat through itself is a very relaxing one! Popular among hikers and nature lovers, this mountain pass in the Western Ghats is a must visit. This mountain pass is also known for its flamingos who say hello all the way from Europe during the monsoons.
