After being termed as a ‘Gas Chamber’ by the High Court, the Delhi Government was quick to take a radical step of trying to reduce the number of vehicles on the road with their odd-even rule. While this has not gone down too well with most Delhiites who have termed it as impractical and inconvenient, some are in support of it and feel this is the only way to curb pollution.

Here are 5 Things Every Delhiite Needs To Know About The Odd-Even Rule:

1. Odd or Even? For the benefit of all the ‘over-smart’ Delhiites, we’ve got to spell this one out because duh! All odd numbered vehicles can ply on odd dates (1, 3, 5…) while even numbered vehicles can ply on even dates (2, 4, 6…)

3. Exemption List – If you’re someone of importance in Delhi (which is almost everyone), you’re exempt from this rule. Here’s the complete list:

President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India, Speaker of Lok Sabha and Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Leaders of opposition in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, Chief Ministers of states except Delhi, Judges of the Supreme Court and the High Court and the Lokayukta, Deputy speaker of Lok Sabha, Governors of states, Lt Governor.
Not just them, women drivers or women with kids below 12 years, people on their way to the hospital for medical emergency, ambulances, fire brigades, prison vans and hearses are also exempt from the rule.
