1. During his Ranji debut season in 2006, his father tragically passed away after being bed ridden for a month having suffered a brain stroke. Virat not only stayed back to complete his innings the next morning, but also went on to score 90 runs! In the words of his mother – “Virat changed a bit after that day. Overnight he became a much more matured person. He took every match seriously. He hated being on the bench. It’s as if his life hinged totally on cricket after that day. Now, he looked like he was chasing his father’s dream which was his own too.”

2. He is only the second batsman in the world to have scored 1,000+ ODI runs for four consecutive calendar years. Not just that, he is also the fastest batsman in the world to score 1,000+ runs in T20 as well as the fastest Indian to score a century, in just 52 balls!

3. In his 161st batting innings, he created two amazing records –

(i) Fastest batsman to score 24 ODI centuries, surpassing Sachin’s record of 219 innings by a mile.

(ii) Fastest batsman to score 7,000 runs, surpassing AB de Villers record of 166 innings.

4. In terms of awards, he’s got his mantelpiece full! He’s received the ICC Player of the year 2012, BCCI’s Polly Umrigar Award for International Cricketer of the Year 2011-12 & 2014-15, Arjuna Award 2013 by the Indian Government and CEAT Cricketer of the year 2011-12 & 2013-14, along with numerous Man of the Match and Man of the Series awards.

5. On a lighter note, his colleagues call him ‘Chiku’ off the field and his passion for dressing well earned him a spot in the top 10 “well dressed international men” in 2012.
