ZEE5 is known to host some of the most thrilling movies and they’ve lived upto expectations with Omerta: The Real Story of Notorious Terrorist Omar Saeed Sheikh, a truly riveting biographical film that’s an out and out nail-biting ZEE5 movie. The movie has been shot in a documentary style with dialogues in English and Hindi. The director largely focuses on Omar’s senseless acts of violence and leaves out the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ that led him to the dangerous world of terrorism.

Here are 5 things you need to know about Omerta:

1. Rajkumar Rao plays a terrorist for the first time

Rajkummar Rao plays the character of a terrorist with absolute brilliance. He also took some classes to get his diction right for the role of a British-Pakistani. After roles in movies like Kai Po Che, Newton and City Lights – this role shows Rao in an absolutely new avatar, which actually makes you fear him.
“Playing Omar in Omertà is certainly one of the most challenging characters I’ve ever played on screen. It drained me completely both emotionally and physically. I could never have imagined that playing this part would mentally take me to such dark places. It’s a journey of one of the most deadliest terrorists of our times and Hansal Sir pushed me out of my boundaries to explore. It is great that ZEE5 will premiere this film digitally, which the world will be able to see”, said Rao.

2. Who is Omar Saeed Sheikh?

So, just in case you don’t know anything Omar. Here’s a quick introduction – Omar, a British national, quit the London School of Economics to avenge the death of his Muslim brothers and sisters in Kashmir, Palestine and Bosnia. Omar first hit the headlines when he was arrested in 1994 in a case related to the kidnappings of four foreigners from New Delhi.

3. This director-actor duo is pairing together for the 4th time

Hansal Mehta and Rajkumar Rao are quite a terrific duo. After City Lights, Shahid and Aligarh – Omerta is a very well made biopic.
Director Hansal Mehta said, “This hasn’t been an easy film to make with multiple locations, adverse weather conditions and often limited resources. What we had in ample measure was heart. The entire team has put their heart and soul into every minute of the process throughout the way. I would like to extend my gratitude to an exemplary cast and crew for their efforts and perseverance. This was my 5th collaboration with Rajkummar Rao and perhaps one of his biggest challenges as an actor. After having made films like Shahid, Citylights and Aligarh together, we were exploring a character’s inner darkness through this film’s protagonist Omar Sheikh. This is a film I’m very proud of. And as the film had predicted then Omar Sheikh with all his complicity in some of this centuries’ most heinous acts of terror is on his way to acquittal by Pakistan’s apex court. Omertà is an important document of our times, a thriller that is finally set to release on ZEE5 and I am really looking forward for the world to experience Omertà.”

4. Terrorist events covered in the film

  • 1994 Delhi Kidnapping where Omar took 4 Israelis and Americans hostage
  • 9/11 Terror Attack in New York
  • 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attack
  • 2002 Kidnapping and death of journalist, Daniel Pearl
