Matching the World record points, set by Ki Bo-Bae, Deepika now hopes to win National glory at the Rio Olympics 2016. Deepika Kumari has equaled the Women’s Recurve Event World Record (WR) at the Archery World Cup 2016 being held in Shanghai, with a score of 686 out of 720.  Here are five things you need to know about the Deepika Kumari:


Childhood

Deepika Kumari, the daughter of Shivnath Mahato, an auto-rickshaw driver and Geeta Mahato who works as a nurse at the Ranchi Medical College. A sport like Archery can be heavy on the pocket but her parents ensured that Deepika got the right kind of training to compete and make her mark.

Rendezvous with Archery 

Aged 11, Deepika had her first rendezvous with Archery at the Arjun Archery Academy, which was setup by then Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda.

 

Journey 

In 2006, Deepika joined the Tata Academy in Jamshedpur where she received a stipend of Rs 500. It was the first time she was playing with appropriate kits. This led to a rise in her career with 15-year-old Deepika winning the cadet World Championship title in 2009.

World Rankings 

Deepika Kumari is currently ranked 7th in the world as per the World Archery Rankings.

 

Recent Accomplishments 

Deepika won two gold medals in the Commonwealth games, in Delhi 2010.  In 2012, Deepika was honored with the Arjuna award. In 2015, she bagged a Silver medal in the World Archery championships and a Bronze medal in the Asian Games. In early 2016, she was felicitated with the prestigious Padma Sri for her exceptional achievements in the field of archery.
